I was skeptical about the idea of playing on XR glasses, to say the least. I had questions running through my head about how to use it, Why I’ll use it, and sarcastic answers to both.
But all of these questions faded into the background when I had the opportunity to try them out for myself. I had a few days to play with a typical version of Viture One XR glasses, a Kickstarter funded project – As strange as the concept seems, it is Do work.
This isn’t the future of gaming for everyone, but the bells of the early days of virtual reality were ringing in my head with the Viture One XR glasses. There’s a lot of work to be done on the prototype I tried out, but despite all my assumptions, it could be the first step into an exciting new gaming category.
Viture Ones gives you the equivalent of a 120-inch screen, and although it doesn’t have a single spec of Best VR Headphones, No need for that. You’ll get a pixel density of 55 pixels, a full 1080p signal running at 60 frames per second, and a peak brightness of 1,800 nits, according to Viture. Now, I wasn’t able to hook the luminometer inside the frames to check for 1800 nits, but the screen was bright enough to combat the direct sunlight streaming in through my living room windows.
There is a bit of a blur around the edge, but the screen looks great. It’s sharp and responsive, and I was constantly drifting into a game or video every time I put on the glasses. Sure, you can see the room around and you’re obviously not looking at an actual screen, but I’ve never fought to immerse myself in everything I was doing. The Viture Ones attracted me, which is shocking considering I usually wear pretty heavy prescription glasses.
Devil May Cry 5 It is what informed me. I played on my steam surfaceConnected directly to the glasses through a USB-C cable, it feels like you’re playing the game on a normal 60Hz screen. Devil May Cry 5 It’s extremely fast, and the Viture Ones have held up exceptionally well. I also watched some YouTube videos and some Netflix on my sofa, which allowed me to lie back or rest my head while the media was always in the center of my field of view.
Having a screen anywhere is a huge plus. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to awkwardly hold my head while playing a game or watching a movie when I want to rest and still see the screen, which is generally so uncomfortable that I don’t he-she. Viture Ones bypass this problem unlike any device you can buy right now, they only weigh 78g so they don’t feel heavy.
The experience at home is great, but I would really like to see the Viture Ones in action on a plane. On-flight sunglasses may seem silly, but I can’t stand my phone to watch a movie or my Steam Deck to play a game on the plane. These glasses seem like a big win if you travel a lot.
Viture Ones might be a glimpse into the future of gaming, at least for fans like me who don’t mind attaching crazy technology to their faces. It’s a glimpse into the future, but we’re not there yet.
Any prototypes come with a laundry list of issues, and Viture has sent out a list of issues it is aware of and is working on manufacturing the glasses that will be shipped. I focus more on the hurdles that arise when designing a unique product, and I hope to see Viture address these issues either before the release of the second edition.
Above all, size is an issue. You have been given three nose pads of different sizes, but none of them fit my (big) nose. Convenience isn’t the issue here either. If the glasses are not placed on your face correctly, you will not be able to see in full screen. I’m well aware of how awkward the glasses look on my face, but that was the only way I could adjust it and still see the screen.
There’s a reason regular eyeglasses have so many adjustment points, and it’s hard to have that flexibility with the amount of technology that’s inside Viture Ones. The ergonomics definitely need more tuning and flexibility for bigger heads.
The glasses themselves don’t have a lot of computing power in them. If you want to access the Android TV operating system, you will need to attach the glasses to a neck strap. The bracelet is very comfortable and light, and all your controls are easy to access. Within two hours, I knew where everything was without a second thought.
The actual computing power is inside the neck strap, and it is actively cooled. The tie heats up, and you can hear a fan inside trying to keep everything cool with minimal ventilation. It’s inconvenient, but with the lackluster built-in speakers it feels like fan noise and the speakers are fighting against each other.
I wasn’t able to try the optional portable dock, which is the third part of the Viture Ones. This docking is exclusively for the switch and connects directly to the console. It probably works in addition to Steam Deck, which is great, and Viture says it can even upgrade from 720p at 30fps to 1080p. The company says 1080p at 60fps, but we’re talking about the Nintendo Switch here.
The Viture Ones are the first step in what could become a popular category over the next few years, especially since we see glasses like Lenovo T1 Eyeglasses begin to appear.
There are some usability hurdles to overcome, but it’s clear that Viture has done a lot to get its first version right out of the gate. The glasses work, which is what I can order now.
